Definitions of My Weird Abbreviations

Family Abbreviations

DH - Dear, darling, darn, damn, doofus, (whatever word starting with D is appropriate at the time *g*) Husband
DD - Dear, darling, darn, damn, doofus, (whatever word starting with D is appropriate at the time *g*) Daughter
SIL - Sister-in-law
BIL - Brother-in-law
MIL - Mother-in-law (noticing a pattern here ;-) ) Meet my MIL
FIL - Father-in-law
WIL - Witch-in-Law (tactful??)
SAHM - Stay At Home Mom (It means we don't work outside the house... but boy, never say we don't work!!)

Trying to Conceive Abbreviations


TTC - Trying to Conceive
AF - Aunt Flo, Your Period, Monthly Curse, On the Rag (Oh, and don't forget dog spot)
IF - Infertility
BD - Baby Dancing, making love for the purpose of conceiving a child.
MW - Making Whoopee, making love just for the fun of it :-)
O - Ovulation
SA - Semen Analysis. Fertility testing of the males. The number of tests they run these days is amazing, it is like 17 different tests.
M/S - Morning Sickness
2WW - 2 Week Wait... the time between ovulation and testing or AF.
RE - Reproductive Endocrinologist
OB/GYN - Obstetrician/Gynocologist
U/S - Ultra sound
HPT - Home Pregnancy Test
BFP = Big Fat Positive (pregnant)
BFN = Big Fat Negative (Not pregnant)
Beta - Blood pregnancy test.
PG - Pregnant
M/C - Miscarriage
CP - Cervical Position. Monitored to help tell fertile time of the month.
CM - Cervical Mucus. Monitored to help tell fertile time of the month.
EWCM - Egg white cervical mucus. It is found at the most fertile time of the month.
BBT - B Basilar Temperature, used to indicate ovulation.
Follicle - a follicle is produced on the ovary and is what 'spits' out the egg. (as my friend likes to say... kind of like a zit ;)) If the follicle is the one that doesn't produce the egg it is usually absorbed back into the ovary. In the case of PCOS... it tends to make cysts.
PCOS - Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. For more information check out PCOS Support website
CBE - Clear Blue Easy, a brand of pregnancy test, it measures at about 50. One of 2 brands that haven't given me a false + test result.
Clomid - Clomid is a Fertily medication to help with ovulation. Out of all fertility meds it is the most mild and chances of multiples is about the same as those who don't take fertility meds. It does cause nasty mood swings, so I have figured out that taking it before bed does help the best with keeping the mood swings under control.
IVF - Invitro Fertilization - it is when they harvest the eggs out of the woman, mix with the semen, and place the fertilized embryos back inside the woman.
IUI - Intrauteran Insemination - or Artificial insemination. The doctors spin down and wash the semen, and then place the semen inside the uterus, to shorten the journey, the sperm have to travel. It increased chances by about 10 -50%

It is an excellent book for people wanting to get pregnant or even for those who are wanting to use Natural Family planning. It teaches you how to monitor what is going on with your body and know when your most fertile time is so you can time BD or you can avoid it.

Other Medical Abbreviations

PCP - Primary Care Physician, Mine is a Woman. I have been seeing Dr. Weber for probably 8 years. I was at her office the day they sent me to the hospital to have Kaitlyn!
FBS - Fasting Blood Sugar
IR - Insulin Resistance. It seems to be common with PCOS. From the best I can understand with the research I have done since being diagnosed, insulin resistance is when your body does produce insulin (unlike diabetes, where your body does not produce enough), but your body does not know how to break it down properly. Therefore the liver works overtime trying to break down the insulin and then can not do it's job of metabolizing food, thus the reason for the overweight issues. It is usually also a precursor to diabetes. (you want your levels below 16)
Metformin - (or Glucophage) Medication used for decreasing blood sugar in diabetics. For insulin resistance they give the medication for those with elevated insulin levels, to help metabolize insulin. (to the best I can figure... all I know is it works *g*)
BP - Blood Pressure
PFT - Pulmonary Function Test. It is a test none to measure lung volumes, flows and a whole bunch of other respiratory functions.
RT - Respiratory Therapist
Prolactinoma - a prolactin producing tumor on the pituitary gland. Parlodel is the medication that helps decrease the Prolactin level.
Hypothyroid - an under active thyroid. In my case cause by Hashimotos disease. I also have a goiter which is an Enlarged thyroid gland.
BM - Bowel movement
Fibro - Fibromyalgia
WLS = Weight Loss Surgery (can be either Gsstric Bypass or a lapband)
